Keys to Victory.....

These are the keys to victory as I see them for the bowl game:
  • Run the ball early
  • Get DJ Hall the ball, this being his last game he will be extra motivated
  • Control their star Linebacker Jordan Dizon
  • Stop the run, put them in 3rd and long their QB is almost as inconsistent as ours
  • Basically all bowl games come down to is who wants it more, each team is trying to avoid back to back losing seasons, so hopefully we will come out fired up and head into the offseason on a positive note.

Independence Bowl Preview

Most previews you will see out there will talk about how last year it was three straight losses, Shula, and the Independence Bowl. Followed by, this year four straight loses, Saban, and the Independence Bowl. They say $4 million dollars and a year later, the Tide is stuck in the same place. I think there is a a lot of difference.

If you haven't been following recruiting, the Tide has jumped to the number two spot on the Rivals.com Team Recruiting Ranking. Big commitments have made their decision, and there are still a few to come. Some discipline problems have been taken care of. And, if you looked at yesterdays post, some relaxing and enjoying the bowl atmosphere is upon us.

With all that said, let's begin the preview. Colorado will line up against the Tide in the 32nd Annual PetroSun Independence Bowl in Shreveport, Louisiana. The Crimson Tide (6-6) will try to avoid their first back-to-back losing seasons in 45 years, while Colorado (6-6) looks to avoid doing the same for the first time in 22 years. Looking at those records, you might think that the match up is quite even. The team averages and ranks below make it almost seem like identical.

The Tide's offense had played well through the first nine games, averaging 31.8 points and 395.9 yards while committing only 11 turnovers. But in its last three games, Alabama scored just 12.0 points, averaged 302.7 yards and turned the ball over seven times. John Parker Wilson was one of the main culprits for the Tide's inconsistency with throwing 5 picks and only 1 touchdown in the last three games.

The Buffaloes were expected to be rebuilding for a second consecutive year under coach Dan Hawkins, and that appeared to be the case following a 1-2 start. But then Colorado ran off three impressive victories, including what was thought to be a program-defining 27-24 upset of then-No. 3 Oklahoma on Sept. 29. Redshirt Freshman, Cody Hawkins looks almost similar to JPW with just a slight bit of more yards, 4 more td's and int's. Hughe Charles will be the ground game while Scotty McKnight will be Hawkins main go to guy.

Obviously, the Buffaloes don't have a receiver as good as D.J. Hall and probably not a db to cover him. We are going to need the offense to come out and establish a running game. JPW, is going to have to make smart throws and just be consistent. The defense is going to have to come out and make it known that they are playing an SEC team. We need to get to the football quick and have as many four and outs as possible. Last I heard, Arenas said he was about 80%, that's good enough for me.

Alabama is no stranger to playing in Shreveport. Aside from their 2006 Independence Bowl loss, the Tide also played in the bowl in 2001, knocking off Iowa State 14-13. Colorado and Alabama have met twice, both in bowls. The Buffaloes won the 1969 Liberty Bowl 47-33, while the Tide won the 1991 Blockbuster Bowl 30-25. This will be the ninth Big 12-SEC match up since the Independence Bowl aligned with those two conferences in 1998. The SEC took the first six meetings before Missouri and Oklahoma State won the last two in Shreveport.

Mid-week Miscellaneous

The Tide went out to Vegas and came back with a trophy. They defeated Missouri State on Saturday night, 81-73 and then Iowa Sunday night, 83-68 to win the Las Vegas Classic.

The Tide has made there way to Shreveport... are you?

They are getting ready for Colorado. Here's some nice info about the two teams.

Since moving up to number 2 in recruiting and only 24 total points behind Notre Dame, SI has an article to tell everyone how well this recruiting year is going.

Here's the list of the bowl games already played, the outcome, and the ones ahead.

Mid-week Miscellaneous

The bad guy? Even mom wanted to know why?

The #10 at Jimmy Johns (the restaurant that is) should be changed to the HeadHunter sandwich.

It looks like Bowden better get out soon and Fisher needs to tighten up ship. 20 Suspended for bowl game.

He screws Alabama. Now he wants to screw West Virginia... out of 4 million.

Terry wants back in. WVU is open. Looks like Auburn would like him back.

Here's the latest list of the carousel.

The bowl series starts tomorrow with Utah and Navy in the Poinsettia Bowl.

Our friends over at Pelican State Sports some how accumulated a few Christmas cards sent to Bobby Petrino. My favorite:
      "Dear Bobby,
Could my son come play for you?
      Merry Xmas,
        Mitch Mustain’s mother
      P.S. Are you single?"

Jackson picks Tide over Tech....

Alabama added another huge commitment to their monstrous recruiting class. Chris Jackson, a 6 foot 180 pound receiver chose Alabama over Georgia Tech. He had been a solid Tech commit for over a year but recently opened his recruiting when Chan Gailey was fired and Navy's Paul Johnson was hired bringing in his option attack. Jackson is going to be a December graduate, which means he will count against last years recruiting class. Which is good because this years class is filling up. Also, another receiver is expected to make his college choice in the next few weeks. Chris Tolliver will be deciding between Alabama and LSU. He is a four star receiver from Louisiana. If we could get him and then get Julio, our receiving corps would be set for the next few years.

I know it's not true, but you got to post it...

A new rumor is out now that Hot Rod has hit the road to Michigan. WestByGodVirginia.net is saying Saban has been contacted.

Jimmy Johns now available at....

Courtesy of a fellow Tipsy Tider, looks like Jimmy Johns is going to be now available at the linebacker position. Let's hope he's not full of baloney. We'll be looking forward to some good sandwiches.

Vegas

The Tide gets set to host the Wofford Terriers tonight in the first round of the Findlay Toyota Las Vegas Classic. Alabama is hosting the first two rounds of the event in Coleman Coliseum before heading to Las Vegas this weekend for two more games. The first game tonight starts at 7:00PM.

Wofford is the first of four games Alabama is guaranteed to play in the Findlay Toyota Las Vegas Classic. It will follow Wofford with hosting Texas Pan American on Wednesday, December 19 at 7:00PM then will travel to Orleans Arena in Las Vegas to play Missouri State on December 22 at 7 :00PM. It will play the winner/loser between Purdue and Iowa State in the fourth and final round on December 23. A win against Missouri State puts Alabama in the 9:30PM game. A loss finds it playing at 7:00PM.

Rodriguez to Michigan

Espn is reporting that Rich Rodriguez has accepted the Michigan Head Coaching position. But us Crimson Tide fans understand nothing is final with this guy. We all remember how he accepted our coaching position before backing out, because his wife told him to. So until I see him in a Michigan press conference I won't believe it.

Mid-week Miscellaneous

Saban no longer the bad guy...

Bobby Petrino has left the Atlanta Falcons mid-season to now become the head coach of Arkansas. Arkansas fans seem to be loving it. But sportswriters are enjoying to hate it.

Foley High Schools Julio Jones has been named Alabama's Mr. Football. We sure better land this kid.

Troy's Tony Franklin is looking to be the main guy to replace Auburn's Al Borges as offensive coordinator.

Les Miles says he's staying at LSU. Others believe different.

Oklahoma State's offensive coordinator Larry Fedora will replace Bower at Southern Miss.

If you have been getting some withdrawals from not seeing all those cheerleaders out on the field. SIOnCampus is doing a rerun of their cheerleader of the week.

One long deserving graduate will become a true alumni. Joe namath is set to graduate from the Capstone this Saturday.

Class adds two more...

Fresh off of a huge recruiting weekend the Crimson Tide has landed two prospects. Robby Green a 4 star Defensive back from John Curtis High in La. Rivals ranks him as the nations 16th corner and a top eight prospect in La. The other commit was Brentwood Tennessee's Chris Jordan. He is ranked by Rivals as the nations 24th best athlete and the Number 3 player from Tennessee. We also hosted many other recruits this weekend that are really sold on the tide. They just have to make a few more visits. We are trying to get some of the early graduates so they can be counted towards last years class. The spots are filling up and that is the main reason these two went ahead and committed. They said Coach Saban didn't pressure them just told them that the class was filling up in a hurry.

Wanting a Playoff?

If you don't like the way all the bowls and national championship game drew up, how about you go make your own playoffs for yourself. ESPN has a playoff simulation where you can customize the teams. Georgia won in mine.

2008 Season Opener

I heard from a pretty reliable source today that our 2008 Season opener will be against Clemson. It will be played in the Georgia Dome and word is College Gameday will be there. Maybe we can break the gameday curse if the game isnt in Tuscaloosa.

And the Heisman Goes To....

A few hours ago Tim Tebow was named the 73rd Heisman winner. He is the first sophmore or freshman to ever win the prestigious award. He finished with 1,957 points and 462 first place votes. Second in the running was Arkansas Darren McFadden, who also was runner up last year. McFadden received 291 first place votes. Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan finished third followed by Missouri's Chase Daniel. Tonight spoke a lot to the talent of the SEC, having the winner and runner up coming from the same conference is pretty special. ESPN has a good article running down Tebow's numbers and such here.

If you missed the speech here is what was said about a million times.
  • I love being a gator
  • I love Gator Nation
  • Thanks to everyone

Stiff arm trophy scandals...

Tomorrow night at 7:00PM another Heisman will be named. The candidates are as follows:
  • Chase Daniel - Missouri
  • Darren McFadden - Arkansas
  • Tim Tebow - Florida
  • Colt Brennan - Hawaii

Everyone believes Tebow is the leading candidate. There is already one up and coming scandal that might cost a previous winner the trophy. Let's hope this years winner isn't in jeopardy also.

Here's a list of all the winners from last nights awards ceremony presented by ESPN.

So close but so far

The Tide held the Hoyas all but the last four minutes or so to drop the game 70-60. Top scorers for the Tide were Richard Hendrix with 17 and Mykal Riley with 15. They held Hibbert to 14 points and 9 rebounds. Experience got the best of us in crunch time.

The Tide will host the Nicholls State Colonels this Saturday at Noon. They will have a three more home games before heading to Las Vegas to play in the Findlay Toyota Las Vegas Classic.

Give'em hell, Joe...?

The guys over at Razorbacks Expats had an interesting post about how they wouldn't mind having back Joe Kines.

Mid-week Miscellaneous

Miles getting some post game loving...

The Tide Druid has put to bed the rumors behind Saban and Baton Rouge.

Looks like the Tommy's are staying put. Tommy Bowden agreed to a four-year extension Tuesday. Tommy Tubberville gave the aubie's a nail biting week, but agreed to a two-year extension.

So, who's got the latest rumor to Arkansas now? Tomahawk Nation thinks Jimbo Fisher is the next candidate.

It's been good to hear of the good news about our recruiting. This weekend is huge. We really need to impress Julio Jones.

Here is the latest on the Heisman watch.

Not sure if you've known, but ESPN has been doing a countdown of the 25 greatest college football players. Here is the list through number 3.

Permanent Team Captains

The University of Alabama football team named its team captains today. An honor usually reserved for senior football players. Not this year. The captains are Senior Darren Mustin, Junior Rashad Johnson and Junior Antoine Caldwell. These guys will do the hand and footprints at the foot of Denny Chimes. I guess if Rashad and Antoine get it next year they will have their footprints twice? not sure. The naming of the Juniors seems to shed a little light on the senior leadership as this award was voted on by the players. Of the three captains, two of them are former walk-ons. The players mentioned that Caldwells leadership didn't suffer during his four game suspension.

If you wanna view a complete list of awards they are located here.

Bowling...

December 30th 2007, Alabama will play Colorado in the 32nd Petro Sun Independence Bowl in Shreveport, Louisiana. Other SEC bowl appearances include:

Our game is set for 7:00PM. Here is some more info about our upcoming visit to the Independence Bowl:
